Heparin calcium

C.A.S. Number. : 37270-89-6

Product description

Heparin calcium is the calcium salt of heparin derived from pig intestines. It is a negatively charged linear polysaccharide belonging to the glycosaminoglycan family. Its main characteristic is the presence of a sequence of five sugars in the polysaccharide chain capable of interacting with antithrombin III (ATIII).

Pharmacological Properties

It binds reversibly to antithrombin III (ATIII) and significantly accelerates the rate at which ATIII inactivates the coagulation enzymes: thrombin (factor IIa) and factor Xa of the coagulation cascade. Heparin calcium can be administered intravenously or subcutaneously.

Uses

  • Treatment of thromboembolic disorders such as deep vein thrombosis, embolism or acute arterial thrombosis, thrombophlebitis, pulmonary embolism and lipid embolism
  • Prophylaxis against deep vein thrombosis and thromboembolic events in predisposed patients
  • Prevention of coagulation in the extracorporeal circuit during haemodialysis
  • Treatment of deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, unstable angina pectoris and acute peripheral arterial occlusion
  • Extracorporeal circulation and haemodialysis
