Catalase

C.A.S. Number: 9001-05-2

Product description

Catalase is an antioxidant enzyme used as an active substance in topical drug products. It is extracted from horse liver.

Pharmacological Properties

After an injury, platelets begin to aggregate and form thrombi in the damaged vessel that temporarily seal off the bleed. At the same time, the inflammatory process, in which immune cells secrete pro-inflammatory cytokines, begins. These cells also produce large quantities of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that are needed to protect the body from developing an infection, but if present in excess, can simultaneously damage the surrounding tissues. The balance between the levels of these reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidant enzymes must be tightly controlled to achieve optimal wound healing. Catalase, as an antioxidant enzyme, is essential for restoring this optimal balance. In addition, catalase catalyses the dismutation of hydrogen peroxide into a molecule of oxygen and water, which is essential for the wound healing process.

Uses

  • Catalase is used in dermatology to treat wounds and ulcers.
